Hello From Your News, Narrative & Design 1 Professor
Hi there! I’m Blake Eskin. You’re receiving this message because you are registered for my News, Narrative & Design 1 course at Lang. As you’ve heard, we’ll be conducting class remotely, and I will do my best to make this a rewarding and meaningful experience for everyone.
Almost every night since the pandemic began, I cook dinner for my family here in Brooklyn. And while I’m chopping and sautéing, my daughter has been bingeing Gilmore Girls on Netflix. It’s astonishing how much the world of journalism has changed since Rory was on her college newspaper (and vice versa):
Through this era of rapid, turbulent change in journalism, I’ve discovered that a lot of learning happens when you have to innovate. That’s why I teach in Lang’s Journalism + Design program, which brings the design process into the study of journalism.
I’m still fleshing out our course design, so more details to follow, but one thing I know we’ll be doing this semester is publishing newsletters. And in those newsletters we will share stories of interest to our target audience. So here are a few things I’ve read and heard recently that I hope might be interesting to you:
Hanif Abdurraqib, They Can’t Kill Us Until They Kill Us
A book collection of music reviews that add up to a memoir of growing up Black and Muslim in the Midwest.Reveal, American Rehab
A podcast miniseries investigating drug-rehab programs that put people overcoming addiction to work — for no pay.Jessica Wakeman, Study Hall, How Choire Sicha Is Steering Style in a Crisis
An article about a New York Times editor who came up through the blogosphere, and what gender, class, and race have to do with the concept of style.
If you’ve come across a story worth sharing, please leave a link in the comments.
I know that there’s a lot of uncertainty in the world right now, and I hope it hasn’t been too hard on you. I look forward to seeing you on Zoom in September. If you have any questions before then, feel free to reply to this message, or write me at eskinb@newschool.edu.
Take care,
B
